It started with a Kodak camera. A simple roll-film camera that my father brought home one afternoon — and something woke up inside me that never really went back to sleep. I've photographed ballrooms that cost more than most people's homes, and banquet halls in the bylanes of Mumbai. In every single one of them, I find myself searching for the same two faces in the crowd. The mother straightening her saree a little too many times. The father who hasn't sat down all evening but suddenly goes very quiet in one corner.
